Short answer: Darts originated over 700 years ago when medieval soldiers threw shortened spears for practice and entertainment. The modern dartboard was standardized in 1896 by Brian Gamlin, whose 1–20 number sequence is still used today. Innovations like electronic dartboards and soft tip darts later transformed the game into a global, accessible sport.
Darts may look like a simple game, but the history of darts is built on creativity and innovation. What started as a way for soldiers to pass time has grown into a global sport played by millions.
With World Creativity & Innovation Day on April 21st, it is the perfect moment to explore the origins of darts and how innovation still plays a key role today.
Darts started as a way for medieval soldiers to practice their aim. Around 700 years ago, soldiers would throw shortened spears or arrowheads at targets to stay sharp and maintain morale during downtime.
This early version of darts was not a structured game, but it laid the foundation for what would become one. The focus was on precision and repetition, two elements that are still central to darts today.
Over time, these informal throwing exercises evolved into a recreational activity, eventually making their way into pubs across England.
The modern dartboard was created in 1896 by Brian Gamlin, a carpenter from Lancashire. He designed the 1 to 20 number sequence to reward accuracy and punish mistakes.
This numbering system is still used on dartboards today. The layout has remained unchanged for over a century, making it one of the most effective scoring systems in sport.

The game is often referred to as “arrows” or “darts,” terms that originate from the French word fléchettes, meaning “small arrows.”
This reflects the game’s origins, as early darts were literally shortened versions of arrows or spears. Even today, the basic idea remains unchanged: throwing a small projectile at a target with precision.
Darts has continuously evolved through technological innovation. One of the biggest changes came with the introduction of soft tip darts and electronic dartboards.
Electronic boards automatically track scores, offer built-in game modes and allow multiple players to compete easily. This made darts more accessible to beginners and casual players.
Soft tip darts are also lighter and safer, making them suitable for home environments. These innovations helped bring darts out of traditional pubs and into living rooms around the world.
Darts continues to grow because it keeps adapting. Innovation today is not just about equipment, but also about how the sport is experienced.
Online streaming, international tournaments and social media have made darts more visible than ever. A new generation of players and fans is discovering the sport, inspired by professionals and content creators.
At the same time, the core of darts remains unchanged: precision, consistency and practice.
Darts is a perfect example of how innovation builds on tradition. From medieval soldiers throwing spearheads to modern electronic dartboards and global tournaments, the game has constantly evolved. The history of darts shows that even a simple idea can grow into something worldwide through creativity and continuous improvement.
