Soft tip and steel tip darts differ in material, rules, and playing experience. Your choice determines which dartboard you use and how you play.
In this blog, you will learn exactly what the differences are and when to choose each option.
Soft tip darts are plastic darts used on electronic dartboards with plastic segments and small holes. These boards automatically register your score and often include features such as lights and sound.
Soft tip darts usually weigh between 18 and 20 grams and go up to a maximum of 22 grams. Heavier darts can damage the board and reduce its lifespan.
The tips are replaceable using a 2BA thread. Breakage is common, but new tips are inexpensive and easy to replace.
Steel tip darts are darts with a metal point used on sisal dartboards made from compressed fibers. These boards close up after each throw, making them suitable for intensive use.
Steel tip is the standard in competitions and professional darts. Most players use 21 to 24 grams, as this provides more stability and control.
Modern dartboards have ultra-thin wiring that reduces bounce-outs and increases scoring potential.
The main difference lies in the dartboard, the darts, and the rules.
Soft tip darts are thrown from 2.44 meters and use an electronic board. Steel tip darts are thrown from 2.37 meters and use a sisal board.
In soft tip, a score counts as soon as the dart hits the segment, even if it falls out. In steel tip, a score only counts if the dart remains in the board until it is removed.
The scoring system also differs. In soft tip, the bull is often 50 points, while in steel tip the outer bull is 25 and the bullseye is 50.
For beginners, steel tip darts are the best choice because they offer more control and are used in almost all competitions.
A weight of 22 to 24 grams in 80% or 90% tungsten is optimal for developing a consistent throw. In combination with a dartboard such as the Winmau Blade 6, you can immediately play at a high level.
Soft tip darts are suitable if you play recreationally, want less noise, or prefer automatic scoring.
Soft tip darts are the best choice when convenience and entertainment are more important than maximum precision.
Electronic dartboards make less noise and automatically keep score. This makes them suitable for home use, bars, and casual players.
Never use steel tip darts on a soft tip dartboard, as the metal point can damage the board and its electronics.
Steel tip darts are the best choice if you want to seriously improve or play competitively.
Sisal dartboards last longer and provide a more realistic playing experience. You can rotate the board to spread wear, which extends its lifespan.
