Good lighting is essential when playing darts. Standard ceiling lights often create shadows or fail to properly illuminate the scoring segments. With a dedicated dartboard light, you can enjoy clearer visibility, more accurate aiming, and a more enjoyable game.
On this page, we explain everything you need to know about dartboard lighting and help you choose the option that best suits your setup. You’ll learn what dartboard lighting is, the different types of dart lights available, how to install them, whether they are universal, and we’ll answer the most frequently asked questions. By the end, you’ll know exactly which dartboard light or light ring is right for your setup.
A dartboard light is designed to shine directly onto your board, removing shadows caused by darts or surrounding objects. This ensures every number and segment is visible, making it easier to focus on your throw and keep track of your score. Pairing your lighting with a quality dartboard can make your setup even more professional.
Ring lights / dartboard light rings – These popular lights form a circle around the dartboard and shine evenly onto it, reducing shadows for maximum visibility. Models like Target Corona Vision or Winmau Plasma are good examples of this type of lighting.
Partial ring lights – Some brands make lights that cover only part of the board. These are usually lighter and more portable, which makes them great if you travel with your darts setup. They also give easier access to collect your darts after a throw.
Open-bottom designs – Certain lights leave the bottom of the dartboard uncovered so it’s easier to retrieve your darts while still providing strong illumination.
The best choice depends on how permanent your setup is, and whether you value portability or full shadow-free lighting.
Most dartboard lights are quick to set up. Common installation methods include:
Magnetic or clip-on lights – Easy to attach and remove, no drilling required.
Wall-mounted lights – Good option for permanent dartboard setups.
Specialized lighting systems – For example, the Target MOD Light only works with the Target MOD System.
Always check the instructions before making a choice. If you’re setting up a permanent darts area, consider combining your lighting with a dartboard surround to protect your walls.
With the right dartboard lighting system, you’ll enjoy better vision, improved accuracy, and a more professional playing experience.
